As a next-generation display technology, COB (Chip on Board) LED displays are designed to overcome the limitations of traditional SMD (surface mount) technology through highly integrated packaging, achieving higher-density, more reliable, and more immersive displays. This design approach not only redefines the performance boundaries of LED displays but also provides a new solution for high-end display scenarios.
From a technical perspective, the COB design directly packages the LED chip onto the PCB substrate, eliminating the traditional bracket and pad structure, significantly reducing the pixel pitch and enabling the fine-pitch application of Mini/Micro LEDs. This integrated approach significantly increases pixel density per unit area, enabling, for example, ultra-high-definition displays below 1.0 pixels. Coplanar packaging technology also reduces screen surface roughness, minimizing moiré and reflections, providing a smoother visual experience for close-up viewing.
Reliability is a core consideration in COB design. Chip-scale packaging provides a physical barrier for the light-emitting unit, effectively protecting it from moisture, dust, and vibration, and reducing failure rates by an order of magnitude compared to SMD. Furthermore, COB utilizes a completely black coating process to enhance contrast, while its surface-source light source eliminates graininess. Combined with High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology, COB delivers more realistic color gradations and dark scene details.
At the application level, COB design focuses on adaptability to any scenario. Whether it's precise data visualization in a control room or immersive light and shadow rendering on a theater stage, its high consistency, low power consumption, and long lifespan meet demanding requirements. In the future, with the convergence of flip-chip and mass transfer technologies, COB will further drive the evolution of LED displays toward seamless splicing and flexible displays, continuing to lead innovation in the display industry.
